West Ham shortlist three Serie A defenders, one would cost just £12.75m

By Will Butcher

CalcioMercato report that West Ham United have shortlisted three Serie A defenders as they look to bring in centre-back cover in January – in the form of Daniele Rugani, Gleison Bremer and Nikola Milenkovic.

Rugani, 27, is struggling for game time with Juventus. He has been afforded less than 200 minutes of game time and it is believed that the Old Lady are ready to sanction the exits of some fringe players in January.

The Italy international will be allowed to leave on loan with a view to a permanent exit. Of course, Angelo Ogbonna is out of action for the rest of the season and Kurt Zouma has suffered a hamstring issue.

Along with Rugani, West Ham are also interested in Torino’s Brazilian defender Gleison – and Fiorentina ace Milenkovic. The latter will cost a bargain £12.75million, with Rocco Commisso also willing to sell.

Rugani, Bremer or Milenkovic: Which should West Ham look to sign?

Rugani is probably the pick of the bunch, but his lack of game time at Juventus over the last couple of years will surely be a concern for Hammers fans. At 27, he is already nearing his peak.

Given that the Hammers do still have Craig Dawson, Zouma and Issa Diop – David Moyes might be better off bringing in a centre-back with more legs, one that is younger and can develop.

Bremer is solid. A Moyes-like centre-back, strong and powerful but good on the ball. But the best move would be Milenkovic. Only turning 24 in October, he is a bargain at £12.75million.

Cheers slartibartfast & Nagel... if he only signed a one year extension then he and Florentina must want him out... give him and his agent an ultimatum of getting the deal done within 48 hours of window opening on 1st Jan with no funny business from the agent and get it done.

ludo, yes it was his agent who scuppered the deal. He signed a 1 year extension, with a €15m release clause.

Milenkovic... isn't he the one with the agent making all sorts of demands re. his commission? I thought he signed a new contract when he didn't join in the summer so unlikely to only be 12m?
